Retina
The retina is a light-sensitive tissue that lines the inner surface of the eye. The retina receives light and induces an electrochemical reaction that is transmitted along the optic nerve to the occipital cortex of the brain. The cells that transmit to the brain are the ganglion cells. The axons of the ganglion cells make up the optic nerve.
There are seven layers of alternating cells and processes that convert light signal into a neural signal. When light strikes the retina, it initiates a surge of chemical and electrical events that trigger nerve impulses. The nerve impulses are sent to various visual centers of the brain through the fibers of the optic nerve.
